Interventional Nephrology Workshop Added to KIDNEYcon 2019

Back by popular demand, KIDNEYcon 2019 will feature a hands-on Interventional Nephrology workshop. This is a relatively new subspecialty of nephrology that improves patient care and outcomes by active management of dialysis access and other interventional techniques related to nephrology. The majority of procedures are performed by a trained interventional nephrologist in an outpatient setting and include endovascular procedures performed to manage dysfunction of arteriovenous fistulas or grafts, peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion, ultrasound-guided renal biopsy, and insertion and removal of tunneled dialysis catheters. The growing role of the nephrologist in performing these procedures has resulted in improved outcomes including timely management, fewer hospitalizations related to dysfunctional dialysis access, lower costs, and better outcomes. This course will provide an introduction to the field of Interventional Nephrology for residents, nephrology fellows and practicing nephrologists. This will also be a great educational opportunity for dialysis nurses and staff. The course is taught by Drs. Mukesh Sharma with the Arkansas Renal Group in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Bharat Sachdeva of Louisiana State University.
